Client Profile: Bhuri Singh

“I want to speak English to everyone.”
Bhuri Singh, Level 1 English student, Seniors' Program Participant
A long-time student of the Indo-American Center’s Literacy Program, Bhuri Singh began attending IAC English classes shortly after arriving in the United States. Moving from Dehli, India in 2007, Bhuri came to the United States with his son and his family. His son first introduced him to the Center, which is a short walk from his home.
Being hard of hearing, Bhuri faces unique challenges as he works to learn the English language. After three years of instruction, he is able to communicate his thoughts and feelings well; however, he struggles with his oral comprehension, unable to clearly hear the other side of conversations.
With determination, Bhuri continues to grapple with his hearing daily at class, enjoying the “chance to learn English.” He is committed to learning the language, desiring to converse with all those whom he encounters, both in class and in daily life. His commitment in the face of difficulties is very impressive and a testament to his dedication to learning.
Bhuri’s involvement at the Indo-American Center does not end with the Literacy Department. He is a regular attendee of the Seniors’ Milan and Golden Diners programs, participating in daily seniors activities and lunches. Reflecting upon his experiences at IAC, Bhuri shares, “The Indo-American Center is my favorite center [in the area] because there are English classes, computer classes, citizenship [assistance], seniors program, public benefits help. There are many, many benefits.”
