Volunteer
The Indo-American Center’s success is only possible with the outstanding commitment of our volunteers. Volunteers teach classes in our Literacy and Civics Department, offer resume critiques in conjunction with our newly developing Job Readiness program, and promote IAC’s mission on the auxiliary L21 board.
Make a difference in the lives of our clients by volunteering with us.
Please email info@indoamerican.org to find out more about volunteering with us.
Citizenship Interviewing
Citizenship interviewers help clients prepare for their Citizenship interviews with the United States Department of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Volunteers work with students one-on-one, provided with interview questions from the Civics Department.
Interested individuals should contact volunteer@indoamerican.org.
CTA Trip Volunteering
CTA Trip Volunteers assist IAC's Literacy students in learning how to use Chicago’s public transportation. Volunteers, ideally in groups of 2-10, commit to purchasing 2 CTA day passes (total cost $11.50). They meet ESL students at noon on a Saturday and take students to a city location of their choice, helping students practice using buses, trains, and reading CTA maps.
Interested individuals should contact volunteer@indoamerican.org.
Literacy Tutoring
Literacy Tutors have the opportunity to tutor adult English as a Second Language (ESL) students as they develop their English language skills. Volunteers work either in small groups or individually with students. Free required training is provided, including 12 hours of ESL training through Literacy Works and ongoing observation of staff instructors and experienced volunteers. Volunteers can network with fellow volunteers at the Department’s quarterly in-service trainings and through other supplemental trainings offered by Literacy Works.

Presenting
Presenters conduct public seminars on various topics related to their professional backgrounds. Seminars take place during the day on Saturdays. We’re looking for accountants to give seminars on filing taxes, IT professionals to give presentations on technology subjects, computer gurus to run workshops on specific topics, medical professionals to conduct health-related presentations and screenings — and anything else you can dream up!
Interested individuals should contact volunteer@indoamerican.org.
Resume Critiquing
The Indo-American Center’s Literacy Program seeks volunteers for its monthly resume critiquing. Volunteers meet for one day each month with several scheduled clients on a one-on-one basis, helping clients to write and format their resumes. Free training will be provided by program staff. Some professional experience in dealing with resumes is helpful.
Interested individuals should contact volunteer@indoamerican.org.
Technology Empowerment Program (TEP) Mentoring
The Indo-American Center’s Technology Empowerment Program, run through the Computer Education Department, is a mentorship program that connects volunteers with computer students once a week for one to two hours. Volunteers and clients meet at the Indo-American Center in the afternoons Monday through Saturday and practice and develop computer skills based on client need. This is a great opportunity for high school students looking for volunteer service hours.
Interested individuals should contact volunteer@indoamerican.org.
